Best food for Cats?
It is never too late to transition a cat to a different diet
We get many questions throughout the day on cat health. Cats being fiercely independent and finicky can make taking care of them, at times, a challenge.
The best thing you can do for your cat is to provide the proper nutrition. Cats are “Obligate Carnivores”, which simply means they need to eat meat to survive. The best diet that we recommend is raw cat food such as Primal Frozen Turkey, or Stella & Chewy’s frozen chicken morsels. Of course, if you can start your cat with this from being a small kitten, that is also best, but let’s face it, we don’t live in a perfect world.
Cats cannot digest carbohydrates, so if you feed them dry kibble, they will develop the “hanging pouch” which many say is the result of undigested carbohydrates. If you keep a cat on canned, wet or raw food, this is much less likely to develop. Moreover, than the aesthetics for the cat is the nutritional value, you will have a happy and healthy cat if you can feed them a species appropriate raw or high protein diet.
It is never too late to transition a cat to a different diet, but it does take “patience and perseverance” as stated by the Two Crazy Cat Ladies. They “mix” small amounts of food in the beginning, slowly building until you have the proper quantity for your pet’s diet. They also recommend setting a schedule for feeding and “stopping the all-day buffet”. If mixing does not work, you can place a small amount next to their regular food, many times the curiosity of it will bring the cat to the new product. I personally have had success by putting a small amount of the food on my finger and rubbing it on my cat’s mouth, once she licked it and found out she liked it, the transition became easier, but it still takes time, be patient!
Canned or “Wet Cat Food” is also a good alternative to raw, as some people just do not like the raw food concept. Two of the favorites in our store are Fussie Cat, as well as Weruva. When you come in to check them out, ask about our loyalty programs as well!
As your cat gets older, we recommend supplementing the food with Digestive enzymes, probiotics, and antioxidants, or an all in one such as CATalyst Antioxidant Enzyme formula offered by the two crazy cat ladies. This formulation helps with joint function, immune system, digestive health, skin & coat and free radical reduction. Under the Weather also has a nice probiotic that helps “promote your cat’s appetite, digestion and immune system” this is a chew that is made with a great whitefish taste that many cats love.
